* An additional 70-day stay in the closing of Reserve Mining Co. was ordered yesterday in the 8th District Court of Appeals in St. Louis. The three-judge panel, however, termed the discharge of taconite wastes into Lake Superior a “monumental environmental mistake.”
* A petition challenging two anti-pornography ordinances enacted last fall by the Duluth City Council was ruled invalid yesterday by Judge Donald C. Odden. Newton Friedman, counsel for the plaintiffs, said he will recommend an appeal to the Minnesota Supreme Court.

* Willhelmina Tylson Fredson will receive her diploma with the class of Duluth Central High School this week after graduating from the Area Learning Center. Fredson had to drop out of high school in 1927 and worked to help support her family.
* Duluth’s Indian community had special reason to celebrate this weekend - it marked the end of the first year of operation of Spotted Eagle School. Spotted Eagle is the first elementary school in the city based on Indian culture and philosophy.
