Duluth City Clerk Kathleen Patt yesterday predicted a 70 percent turnout of Duluth voters for next week's primary. Patt cited voter interest in races for both U.S. Senate seats and challenges in St. Louis County against the incumbent county attorney and sheriff.
The first work on the I-35 freeway extension past downtown Duluth to 10th Avenue East will begin next week with the taking of soil borings. The freeway extension is expected to be completed by 1982 if it starts on schedule.

A natural gas pipeline exploded late last night just south of Carlton, causing an unknown amount of damage and shutting down parts of Interstate 35 and County Road 61 for a few hours. The Great Lakes Gas Transmission Co. pipeline runs under the highway.

Duluth's public school teachers return to work this week facing the possibility of a strike if contract negotiations fail this fall. Negotiations resume Sept. 15, but after 18 months of talks it's unclear when the two sides might reach an agreement.
