  • A bear broke into a house near Twig this weekend and caused extensive damage after he was frightened away from a neighboring home, said Kenneth LaBoone, area game warden. The occupant of the second home was away at the time.
  • Fire yesterday destroyed the Bright Spot Building at Seventh Avenue West and Fourth Street in Ashland, one of the oldest buildings in town. The building had been used for a soda fountain, but in earlier years had housed a cigar factory and a creamery.

  • Duluth city administrators yesterday proposed a 1993 city budget with no property tax increase and a $2 million shortfall. The city will turn to city councilors, employees and the community for input on how to make up the shortfall, Mayor Gary Doty said.
  • Eveleth Mines will undergo a six-week shutdown beginning Nov. 12 because one of its major customers, Armco Inc., is obtaining iron ore from Brazilian producers for the remainder of this year. Most Eveleth Mines employees will be laid off.
