The value of taxable property in St. Louis County, excluding Duluth, increased this year to about $1.04 billion, ten percent more than last year. In Duluth, the valuation jumped from $706.1 million to about $800 million, a 13 percent increase.

The Superior Police and Fire Commission yesterday ordered the police and fire departments to come up with new physical tests for hiring. The new tests, which will be pass-fail, should give female candidates a better chance to get hired.

Sept. 21, 1998

The majority of residents surveyed in six Wisconsin counties believe that prisons have either little impact or a positive impact on nearby communities. The Douglas County Prison Task Force developed the survey to determine how prisons are affecting communities.

Duluth school officials purchased a new library-management system this year and looking for volunteers to put new barcodes on library books. Duluth has 23 schools and each school library has an average of 11,000 books, so it's a major undertaking.
