The town of Ely yesterday celebrated Robert Short's primary victory over U.S. Rep. Donald Fraser for the late Hubert Humphrey's Senate seat. Short advocates locally popular multiple-use management of the BWCA, while Fraser proposed tighter federal controls on the wilderness area.

Two veteran Iron Range legislators will be missing from the 1979 Minnesota Legislature after losing in this week's primary election. Rep. Peter Fugina of Virginia lost to college instructor Dominic Elioff, and John Spanish of Hibbing lost to Lona Minne.

Sept. 14, 1998

Plans for construction of a 601-space parking ramp at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center will be reviewed tomorrow by the DECC's building committee. Planned completion of the $5.3 million ramp, which will connect to the existing Northwest Passage skywalk, is Oct. 1, 1999.

The St. Louis County Fair in Hibbing needs to move next summer to make way for construction of the $20 million joint campus of Hibbing Community College and Range Technical College. Fair officials are seeking a temporary home for 1999.
