  • Incumbent Duluth Mayor Robert Beaudin won yesterday’s DFL primary election by a 2-to-1 majority over challenger Earl Rogers. The primary was tantamount to an election since Beaudin’s name will be the only one appearing on the November ballot for the office of mayor.
  • Reserve Mining Co. has agreed with the state to limit its mining of taconite at Babbitt to 40 years from the time on-land disposal is initiated. The agreement is one of the conditions for resolving the controversy over disposal of taconite waste materials.

  • Volunteers completed painting of the Leif Erikson Viking Ship yesterday, marking the final leg of a 10-year project to restore the ship. The figurehead and the tail are all that remain of the restoration project on the 1926 Norwegian ship.
  • Partially paralyzed from a car accident 16 years ago, Superior’s Paul Hlina is hiking the 200-mile Superior Hiking Trail on crutches to raise funds for the trail. Hlina began in Two Harbors on Aug. 25 and hopes to finish this week.
