  • Duluth City Councilman Robert J. LaPine last night urged strong action to keep all city fire stations open. The Duluth Fire Fighters Union last week recommended that their membership refuse to work at three stations because of unsafe staffing levels.

  • Alex Laveau, a Carlton County commissioner, died yesterday after giving a speech dedicating a new scenic overlook on Minnesota Highway 23 near Wrenshall. Laveau, a World War II veteran, was instrumental in getting the veterans memorial overlook built.
