Secretary of Defense Melvin R. Laird spoke about President Nixon's proposed cease-fire in Indochina yesterday in his noon address to the Duluth Rotary Club in Hotel Duluth. Laird termed the action an "historic peace initiative."

An anticipated $3.3 million loss in St. Louis County mineral valuation for 1971 was announced yesterday by the county auditor. The amount is what the county stands to lose for taxing purposes in 1971. Oct. 9, 1990

The Minnesota State Patrol is establishing unannounced nighttime roadblocks on Duluth area roads beginning this month to try to battle drunk driving. A recent U.S. Supreme Court decision allows police to randomly stop motorists in search of drunk drivers.

Dozens of people watched in silence yesterday as the remains of 50 Native Americans were carefully placed in Indian burial mounds at Itasca State Park. Some of the remains had been stored in museums and universities for more than a century.
