Police records from March 1 through Sept. 12 show a rise in vandalism in the Lakeside-Lester Park area of Duluth. Records for the period list 403 incidents of vandalism, ranging from toppled trash cans to broken windows in homes, businesses, and cars.

The U.S. Senate Energy and Environment Committee yesterday gave unanimous approval to the compromise BWCA bill offered by Minnesota Sen. Wendell Anderson. But members of the Boundary Waters Conservation Alliance argued the bill was not allowed enough discussion in the committee.

As it celebrates its 20th birthday, the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District is making a complete about-face in how it does business. A $32 million project will move the district from incinerating Duluth-area sewage sludge to providing it to farmers as fertilizer.

Advanced Data-Comm Inc., by far the largest of 15 businesses burned out of Superior's Tower Building on July 26, is nearly ready to resume full operations. In the coming weeks, the company will be rehiring 50 to 75 workers.
