The season's last shipment of iron ore will leave the Duluth-Superior harbor this week, bringing the ore and taconite shipping season to one of its earliest ever closings. Shipments of taconite pellets have dwindled since steelworkers went on strike Aug. 1.
Construction workers at U.S. Steel Corp.'s Minntac expansion project at Mountain Iron were kept from their jobs again yesterday by striking steelworkers. The blockades, which began a week ago, are keeping 1,600 construction workers off their jobs at Minntac.

The Duluth School System has been awarded a $1.2 million grant from the state to build a new youth center in Lincoln Park. Ground was to be broken next spring, but the project is on hold because of a dispute over parking space.
Groups that often disagree on issues yesterday found themselves all voicing support for the Nov. 4 excess levy referendum for expanded programs in Duluth public schools. The referendum would bring in funding for reading programs, technology, and all-day kindergarten.
