* State Sen. James Ulland yesterday urged the federal government to direct more resources toward lamprey control. Ulland cited a recent Minnesota Department of Natural Resources study that found more lake trout and whitefish scarred by lamprey than in 1970.

* The 100th anniversary of the opening of the Duluth ship canal will be observed next Sunday afternoon in Canal Park. Mayor Ben Boo said yesterday the newly renovated Canal Park will also be dedicated during the program.

* The committee working on a plan to create a medical district in Duluth released its final report yesterday. Committee members studied the area between Third and Fourteenth avenues east and between Fifth and Superior streets.

* Duluth Mayor John Fedo came out ahead of challenger Gary Doty in a WDSM Radio News poll conducted this week. Fedo was favored by 43 percent of people questioned compared with 35 percent for Doty.
