Oct. 15, 1978

Minnesota Health Commissioner Warren Lawson yesterday investigated the operation of Duluth's Park Point Manor. Earlier this week, the Senior Citizens' Coalition of Northeastern Minnesota demanded that the facility be placed in receivership, but Lawson did not comment yesterday on any such proceeding.

The North Fifth Street Emporium, a mini-mall located in a renovated 1880s-era boarding home, opened last week in Superior's North Fifth Street neighborhood. Twenty years ago, the neighborhood was a bustling business district but it has since declined.

A consultant has recommended a site at the end of Jack Pine Lane in Cloverland Township for a proposed Douglas County Lake Superior harbor of refuge. However, an estimated price tag of $5,960,000 to build and $11,000 in annual maintenance could kill the project.

Four giant stainless-steel vessels that will be part of Potlatch Corp.'s $528 million expansion will begin their trip through Duluth today. The pulp digesters, each weighing over 80 tons, will be transported from Duluth's Port Terminal to the Cloquet paper mill.
