Staff members from UMD and the St. Louis County Welfare Department are planning for a new day care facility to open in mid-November. The Observation Hill Day Care Center will be located at 826 W. Third St., formerly St. Peter's School.

The UMD Bulldogs captured their first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football championship in 11 years yesterday by beating the Macalester Scots 21-0 in St. Paul. The win boosts their overall record to 8-1, the most wins ever by a UMD grid squad. News Tribune, Nov. 4, 1993

A new Taco Bell restaurant is being planned for the Stone Ridge Shopping Center near the Miller Hill Mall. The Taco Bell will be located on a site formerly planned for Pier 1 Imports, which later passed on the location.

Retired Duluth schoolteacher Len Golen will receive the Joe Wiesinger Community Service Award today for his volunteer activities. Golen retired from the Duluth school district at the end of the last school year after teaching in the district for about 30 years.
