  • The past, present and future of Minnesota’s forests will be displayed in the $1 million Forest History Center planned for Grand Rapids by the Minnesota Historical Society. The center will be located on land donated by the Blandin Paper Co.
  • Shirley Cimperman is the first woman officer in the history of the Mountain Iron Police Department and, to her knowledge, the only woman officer in the area. Officer Cimperman, who started work Oct. 7, grew up in nearby Parkville.

  • Cook County Sheriff John Lyght lost a re-election bid this week after 22 years in the office when voters chose Deputy David Wirt by 1,260-1,187 votes. Wirt said people thought now was the time for someone new.
  • Plans are underway for development of a 37-acre bay on the south edge of Tower that would give Lake Vermilion boaters direct access to the city’s business district. Officials say the development could turn the city into a premier year-round tourist destination.
