Efforts at settling the Hermantown teachers strike, which enters its second week tomorrow, apparently failed yesterday. The dispute will now go to arbitration, and a spokesman for the Hermantown School Board said the board will accept the results of the arbitration.

The first issue of this school year's UMD Statesman came off the presses last week with a new, nonsexist name -- the UMD Statesperson. The name was the decision of the paper's new editor, Judy Cavanaugh, co-author of a women's liberation column. News Tribune, Sept. 30, 1993

New property value assessments were released this week in Superior, the first time since 1981 that a citywide evaluation has been done. Property values increased an average of 21 percent, causing a number of calls to the city assessor's office.
