  • The Federal Water Pollution Control Administration yesterday released a report saying the discharge of tailings into Lake Superior from Reserve Mining Co.'s taconite plant in Silver Bay has a deleterious effect on the delicate balance of a portion of the lake.
  • The American Accordionists Association has invited the Duluth Accordionaires to perform at a commemorative concert on Aug. 8 in the Hotel Commodore in New York City. More than 35 countries will be represented at the event. News Tribune

  • Fond du Lac Reservation officials have been petitioned by some members to hold a voter referendum on whether to stay in a treaty-rights agreement with the state of Minnesota. Band members voted last summer to reject the pact with the state.
  • The Internal Revenue Service has filed a lien against Lakewood Industries, the struggling chopsticks maker in Hibbing, for not paying $68,052 in taxes. If the delinquent taxes aren't paid, the federal government could seize the Lakewood property.
