The Federal Water Pollution Control Administration yesterday released a report saying the discharge of tailings into Lake Superior from Reserve Mining Co.'s taconite plant in Silver Bay has a deleterious effect on the delicate balance of a portion of the lake.

The American Accordionists Association has invited the Duluth Accordionaires to perform at a commemorative concert on Aug. 8 in the Hotel Commodore in New York City. More than 35 countries will be represented at the event. News Tribune

Fond du Lac Reservation officials have been petitioned by some members to hold a voter referendum on whether to stay in a treaty-rights agreement with the state of Minnesota. Band members voted last summer to reject the pact with the state.

The Internal Revenue Service has filed a lien against Lakewood Industries, the struggling chopsticks maker in Hibbing, for not paying $68,052 in taxes. If the delinquent taxes aren't paid, the federal government could seize the Lakewood property.
