Following one of the longest jury selection processes in state history, the murder trial of Roger Caldwell is set to begin in Brainerd. After 17 days of jury selection involving 81 interviews, the second and last alternate was seated yesterday.
The Sawyer County Board yesterday voted to support a three-county effort to start a short-line railroad between Hayward and Bayfield. Plans call for trains to serve towns along the route with the possibility of running a steam passenger train for tourists.

Ballots will be counted in Hermantown tomorrow for two school referendum questions, the largest seeking $4.4 million for building projects and computer technology. Hermantown is one of the few Northland school districts that is growing, with enrollment increasing by 500 in the last decade.

Members of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Duluth will hold their final service at the church on May 13, two days before all the church's contents are auctioned off to pay a court settlement. Members will then determine what will happen next.
