Officials of the White Pine Copper Co. in Michigan hope a recent merger with the Louisiana Land and Exploration Co. will allow them to keep operating. The mine has about 1,600 workers now, but at its peak it employed well over 3,000.
C. Arthur Nichols of Duluth is mailing letters to the 42 survivors of a group of World War I veterans announcing the end of reunions they've held since 1920. The veterans were all part of Base Hospital 13 in France.

A black powder rifle deer hunting season will be held in Jay Cook State Park this fall despite some protests. The season will be Nov. 29 to Dec. 7 to coincide with the black powder muzzleloader season statewide.
Genesis Equipment & Manufacturing will be the first tenant in a new industrial park being created on Connors Point in Superior. The company, which is expected to open Dec. 1, will initially employ 16 machinists, welders and technical personnel.
