More than 100 students walked out of Cass Lake High School yesterday in protest of the school board's decision not to rehire Jerome Einger as assistant principal. The walkout ended when Einger urged students to return to their classes.
The newly established Northeast Minnesota Historical Center at UMD will soon be recording interviews with people who have been engaged in the commercial fishing industry on Lake Superior. It's part of an effort to develop a research collection on the history of trade on the lake.

Loitering and disorderly conduct in downtown Duluth will be attacked with the help of a $72,661 grant from the U.S. Justice Department. The grant will be used to bolster the number of Duluth police officers patrolling on foot in the downtown area.
Minnesota Gov. Arne Carlson said yesterday he will not oppose an increase in the taconite production tax that's included in the Legislature's tax reform bill. The tax will go from $2.09 per ton of pellets to $2.13 next year.
