The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has scheduled for June 8 an attempt to raise several of the barrels dumped into Lake Superior by Honeywell Inc. more than 15 years ago. The contents of the barrels will be analyzed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The Duluth City Council yesterday voted to purchase the Granada Stage Bar, 118 E. Superior St., for $31,000. The property will be used to provide access to a park on a platform spanning the proposed I-35 expansion.

The Minnesota Federation of Teachers is suing the Duluth school district over its contract with a for-profit charter school company. The suit asks the court to review the contract with the Edison Project, which will open a charter school in Duluth this fall.
Duluth's new teen hangout, The Basement, opened this weekend in the Central Hillside Community Center at Lake Avenue and Fourth Street. The Basement is designed to give students in grades 9-12 a place to go and have fun.
