A shortage of parking in downtown Duluth is being aggravated by the Lyric Block and Lake Superior Plaza developments and expansion of the Radisson Duluth Hotel. When completed, all those facilities will have parking ramps to help alleviate the problem.
Superior National Forest officials plan to spray 2,300 acres of pine and spruce with herbicides this summer to remove competing vegetation. Robert Rehfeld, forest supervisor, said yesterday the herbicide 2,4-D will be used because it is bio-degradable.

The Duluth School Board next week will consider curriculum changes for grades 5-8 that will place more emphasis on reading, language, mathematics, and sciences. The change, called "core curriculum," is driven by low test scores and input from teachers and parents.
Volunteers heading for the Grand Forks flood zone will leave Duluth this Saturday morning for a weekend of cleaning devastated neighborhoods. The effort by Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota is one of several organized by Northland churches and other groups.
