  • All Two Harbors schools will be closed today because of high absenteeism resulting from influenza, said Gordon Klein, high school principal. Klein said 220 high school students were absent yesterday morning and 23 more went home during the day.
  • The Minnesota Education Association reported yesterday that the Duluth public school system no longer ranks among the state's highest enrollment districts. Duluth slipped from fourth to sixth place, according to the Association's publication, "Basic Financial Data." News Tribune

  • After 100 days, no end is in sight to the bitter strike by employees of Monson Trucking, one of the area's largest trucking firms. About 130 Monson workers in Duluth and Red Wing struck Nov. 27 after their contract expired.
  • While the state prepares to spend an additional $300,000 to feed whitetail deer that can't get at their natural food because of heavy snow in northern Minnesota, some biologists say winter feeding of deer is a waste of money.
