Proposed regulations for use of motorized watercraft in the BWCA have been drafted by the U.S. Forest Service. The regulations allow for possession of a five-horsepower "kicker" engine and a 25-horsepower motor, providing that only one is in use at a time.
A Lake County grand jury, after inspecting the county jail in Two Harbors, has declared the 74-year-old facility to be inadequate. County and city officials have agreed the jail should be replaced but say funding for a new building is not available.

The Duluth City Council voted 5-4 last night to require council approval of all spending over $25,000 by the Duluth Economic Development Authority. The resolution followed criticism in December by community activists that DEDA lacked accountability and oversight.

St. Louis County Administrator Julie Brunner will announce to the County Board today that she is leaving her post to become the deputy commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Health. Brunner will tend to the Health Department's internal operations.
