Sen. Wendell Anderson said yesterday the Air Force has recommended the Defense Department begin closing the Duluth Air Base later this year. Anderson learned the Air Force made the recommendation earlier this year but did not reveal the intention to Duluth city officials.

Four members of the Unification Church have been arraigned in St. Louis County Court on charges of soliciting without a peddler's permit. The four were arrested by Hibbing police earlier this week for selling candy on a city street.

The Duluth Zoo is breaking ground today for a Primate Conservation Center where zookeepers hope to breed endangered species. By fall, the center will house five species of primates - ring-tailed and red-ruffed lemurs, Diana monkeys, and two species of tamarins.

A power outage in parts of Carlton County this weekend kept some fans from following their team in the state boys' Class A basketball championship. By the time the power was restored, the game was over and the Carlton Bulldogs had lost.
