A special task force told the Spirit Mountain Authority Board yesterday that the recreation area should close each spring as a step toward becoming profitable. The task force also recommended a nationwide search for an executive director.

Cargill Inc. announced yesterday it will build a $7 million, 1.8-million-bushel addition to its big grain elevator complex on the Duluth waterfront. The project is expected to begin in April and be completed before the 1980 shipping season.

March 2, 1999

The first 25 of 75 previously determined layoffs at Blandin Paper Co. in Grand Rapids will take place April 2, the company announced yesterday. Blandin, which produces lightweight coated printing paper, announced the layoffs last June as part of a cost-reduction plan.

Gov. Jesse Ventura's proposed two-year $560.6 million increase for K-12 education funding won't offset expected financial losses in northern Minnesota school districts next year. Declining enrollments will force districts to defer maintenance, cut programs, and lay off teachers during the 1999-2000 school year.
