Christopher Timm of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said yesterday the condition of western Lake Superior will soon be improving. Timm said the opening of the WLSSD facility and Reserve Mining's ceasing to dump taconite waste will reduce pollution.

Some opposition has surfaced over the construction of the Iron River National Fish Hatchery, which is scheduled to begin this spring. Those opposing the project cite environmental concerns, the loss of private lands, and tax increases in Tripp Township.

The Minnesota House yesterday trimmed funding for several Northland projects in its bonding bill. The bill pledges $21.2 million to UMD for a library estimated to cost $22.3 million and $14 million to the Hibbing Community and Technical College consolidation priced at $16 million.

The IRRRB Board yesterday approved $1 million in loans to help renovate the 84-year-old Martin Hughes School in Buhl, turning the building into a KidsPeace education and counseling center for troubled teenaged boys. Work is expected to begin in mid-April.
