  • Dr. Donald I. Mount, director of the National Water Quality Laboratory in Duluth, said yesterday in Lake County District Court that he believes the Reserve Mining Co. waste discharge has a "material adverse effect" on Lake Superior's water.
  • Employees of Schumann Bros., an industrial painting firm, began work this week on a $114,000 contract to clean and paint Duluth's Aerial Bridge. This will be the first such improvement for the lift span since 1956. News Tribune

  • A large crowd of people turned out yesterday afternoon to welcome the Navy frigate USS Fahrion as it docked at the Duluth Port Terminal. The ship will stay in Duluth this weekend as part of the Navy's goodwill and recruiting tour.
  • Mayor John Fedo said yesterday that Duluth is still a candidate for a Northwest Airlines maintenance base, although it would have only about two-thirds as many jobs as previously announced.
