  • Preparations are under way to reopen Duluth's old Strand Theater at 16 E. Superior St. as a plush, 280-seat luxury movie house called the Cinema. The decor will feature stone walls, a water fountain, red or gold draperies, and velvet-touch wallpaper.
  • Duluth Mayor Ben Boo has designated July 26 as Joe Priley Day to express the city's appreciation to the commissioner for his work in beautifying the Civic Center. The recently completed tiered water fountain will be named Priley Fountain. News Tribune

  • About 150 people combed the land along the St. Louis River near Scanlon yesterday, getting rid of trash and drawing attention to the problem of pollution. Volunteers from Duluth, Cloquet, Scanlon, Esko, Superior and the Fond du Lac Reservation participated.
  • The Duluth City Council this week discussed an ordinance that would require cats to be kept indoors or on a leash and also make rabies shots mandatory for cats.
