More than 43 million tons of cargo were moved through the Duluth-Superior port during 1969 by Great Lakes and oceangoing ships. The tonnage was nearly 14.5 percent more than in 1968, according to the Seaway Port Authority of Duluth.

The U.S. Interior Department's highest unit award for service excellence was presented to the National Water Quality Laboratory in Duluth yesterday for developing a method of tracing and identifying taconite tailings in Lake Superior far beyond the point of discharge. Feb. 19, 1990

The new Superior Ice Arena will host a major national skating event in 1992, organizers have announced. The Northland Figure Skating Competition will feature more than 600 skaters from Minnesota, the Dakotas, and Wisconsin.

It will be neighbor against neighbor in Superior's 7th District City Council primary next week as Bletia Scott and Laura Star try to unseat incumbent Bob Gale. All three live within just a few blocks of each other.
