  • The Minnesota Municipal Commission yesterday announced that the town of Herman is to become the city of Hermantown next Dec. 31. Next fall, Hermantown will hold its first city council and mayoral election ever to select a five-member governing body.
  • Jack McKenna, former Duluth television weatherman, is returning to the Twin Ports and WDIO-TV, the station announced yesterday. McKenna left Duluth in June 1973 for a weathercasting position in Denver and soon accepted a similar position in San Francisco.

  • UMD hockey coach Mike Sertich was hospitalized last night after suffering apparent heart palpitations during a game against Minnesota in Minneapolis. Sertich collapsed on the Bulldog bench early in the third period of UMD’s 4-1 loss at Mariucci Arena.
  • Coho salmon fishing on Lake Superior’s North Shore has offset what many say is slower fishing this year for Kamloops rainbow trout. Russ Francisco, owner of Marine General Supply of Duluth, says anglers have been successful trolling for salmon.
