- The Duluth City Council yesterday delayed action on a proposed merger between the port authorities of Duluth and Superior. The main concern was that Duluth, with $10 million in assets, would come out on the short end of the deal financially.
- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to dispatch the tug Lake Superior this morning to search for barrels of classified material dumped into the lake near Duluth about 1960. If the barrels are located, water quality in the area will be tested.

- The Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board today is expected to grant $500,000 to help develop a $3 million Quad Cities curling club. The club will serve curlers and citizens from the Quad Cities of Eveleth, Gilbert, Mountain Iron, and Virginia.
- The Duluth City Council voted unanimously last night to increase the price of an unlimited season golf pass at municipal courses by 7 percent next year. Councilors decided the city’s requested increase, which was higher, would drive golfers away.
