* Duluth Mayor Ben Boo is expected to announce today that he will resign after Jan. 1 to become director of the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District. The front-runner as Boo’s possible successor appears to be Duluth attorney Leo McDonnell.
* The city of Duluth Research and Planning Department has published the book “Duluth’s Legacy, Volume I – Architecture.” The book, part of the city’s bicentennial efforts, is intended to impart a better understanding and appreciation of Duluth’s unique architectural heritage.

* Duluth philanthropist Julia Marshall died in her home yesterday at age 98. Marshall and her sister, Caroline, who died at 101 two years ago, conceived, promoted and financed dozens of Duluth civic improvements during their lifetimes.
* One year ago yesterday, flight 5719 crashed into a mine dump a few miles from the runway at Chisholm-Hibbing Airport, killing all passengers and crew. About 80 relatives and friends gathered in a Hibbing church yesterday for a memorial service.
