The St. Louis County Board at its next meeting will consider a proposal to raise the salaries of its elected and appointed department heads by 7.5 percent next year. County officials say the increase falls within President Carter's inflation fighting guidelines.

Duluth police yesterday warned that the local street drug market is flooded with bogus amphetamine tablets, many containing only caffeine or similar non-controlled minor stimulants. By issuing the warning, police hope to cut the profits of drug dealers.

A study prepared for the Wisconsin DNR says it could cost up to $93 million to clean up contaminated areas in and near Ashland's Kreher Park. Northern States Power, which operated a manufactured gas plant on the site, would pay part of the cost.

After nearly a month of above-normal temperatures, the Northland has been hit with some real winter weather. A storm this week brought more than eight inches of snow, and a cold front will be sending temperatures well below zero for a few days.
