  • A joint House-Senate committee reported yesterday that metal-studded tires cause up to $5 million in damage to Minnesota highways each year and should be banned after May 1. The report is a recommendation to the 1971 Legislature.
  • The Duluth City Council next week will consider a resolution calling for a 7 percent salary increase for unclassified city employees in 1971. The raise would bring the salaries of four city jobs -- besides that of the mayor -- over $20,000. News Tribune

  • The Lake County Board of Adjustment yesterday denied a state request to build a communication tower near Bear Lake in the vicinity of Silver Bay. The tower is part of a planned Department of Transportation mobile radio network.
  • Northeast Ventures, a Duluth-based venture capital firm, confirmed yesterday that it has purchased a $225,000 minority stake in Partridge River Inc., a furniture parts manufacturer in Hoyt Lakes. Partridge River, which employs 47 people, is planning an expansion.
