  • Segregation in Duluth's public schools may be eliminated in the next two years with planned public housing construction. The 200 units of low-cost housing are designed to disperse minority members throughout the community, according to HRA officials.
  • Downtown Duluth's air pollution index has been well below the 100 level in recent weeks because of fairly strong winds and a lack of temperature inversions. Another factor is the temporary shutdown of the lime plant at Eighth Avenue West and the waterfront.

  • Funding has run out for Duluth's only ex-offender program, which offered ex-offenders help in building constructive, self-sufficient lives. Director Paul Dwyer said yesterday that since the program began in April 1990, only 10 percent of the 163 participants committed additional crimes. Peter Hanson of Minneapolis won his second straight AAA Triathlon title yesterday at Pike Lake.

    Hanson completed the 1-mile swim, 29-mile bike ride, and 6.2-mile run in 2 hours, 15 minutes, and 53 seconds.
