  • Steelworker union officials approved a new three-year contract with the steel industry yesterday, sparing the nation's economy a crippling strike. In Duluth, a U.S. Steel spokesman said preparations are under way for an orderly resumption of operations at the Morgan Park facility.
  • Phoebe Morgan of Hayward won the women's birling world title yesterday at the World Lumberjack Championships in Hayward. Miss Morgan is the first Wisconsin resident to win the world title since Arbutus Lamoureux won the women's birling title in 1952. News Tribune

  • The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency plans to levy a fine of up to $500,000 against Boise Cascade Corp. for violations of pollution standards at its International Falls paper mill. The company has been dumping common pollutants and dioxin into the Rainy River.
  • A nearly $7 million contract for work on the North Shore's second highway tunnel, at Silver Creek Cliff, was awarded yesterday to Johnson Brothers Corp.
