The Duluth City Council yesterday voted to proceed with plans for a city-financed addition to the Lyric Block parking ramp downtown. Funding will come from a combination of assessments to properties surrounding the Lyric Block and from a proposed increase in parking meter fees.
Duluth Mayor Robert Beaudin has removed from today's City Planning Commission agenda a proposal to sell two vacant firehalls. Beaudin said the city may find other uses for the firehalls, which have been replaced by newer facilities in Duluth Heights and near UMD.

The Bayfront Blues Festival kicked off its ninth year yesterday in a recently expanded Bayfront Festival Park with sunshine and a breeze off the lake. Sixty thousand people are expected to attend the festival over its three days.
Saint Mark African Methodist Episcopal Church will be extending its thanks to the Duluth community with a celebration next week. The first phase of renovations to the 97-year-old building has been completed, mostly with donations from outside the 18-member congregation.
