Minnesota Gov. Rudy Perpich met with steel company representatives yesterday in an effort to end the four-week-old strike by steelworkers in Northeastern Minnesota. Perpich will try today to meet with Lloyd McBride, president of the United Steelworkers of America.
About 200 mayors from around the country are in Duluth for a U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting on municipal economic development. In the keynote address yesterday, Duluth Mayor Robert Beaudin outlined the economic development program used by the city of Duluth.

Aireal Sandman of Duluth was named the Outstanding Senior Citizen in Minnesota yesterday at the Minnesota State Fair. Her community activities include work with the Senior Olympic Games, the Bocce Ball Games for seniors, and the Harrison Senior Center in Lincoln Park.
Moose Lake will soon have a new city hall, library and community center thanks to an $858,000 low-interest loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. A vacant grocery store downtown will be renovated to create the new civic center.
