About 8,000 acres of mostly jack pine trees have died as a result of drought conditions in the Superior National Forest. Because of the increased fire danger, an effort will be made to have private loggers harvest the trees this winter.
Only about 30 persons attended a public informational meeting yesterday in Duluth on an environmental impact statement for extension of I-35 from Mesaba Avenue to 10th Avenue East. John Peyton, founder of the Stop the Freeway group, called the meeting a charade.

School began yesterday for 320 students at the Edison Kenwood Charter School and 220 at the Edison Central Charter School in Duluth. Duluth has two of 13 new schools being opened nationwide this fall by the New York-based Edison Project.
A new home for men in transition from violence, alcohol, and drugs will open this week in Duluth. The Vine, a three-story house on East Superior Street, is a partnership between Loaves and Fishes and the Vineyard Christian Fellowship.
