In the recently released "Final Report on Classified Scrap in Lake Superior," the Army Corps of Engineers recommends the search for barrels dumped into the lake be terminated. The report says the 1,437 barrels are of no environmental consequence.
The number of federally funded student loans given in Duluth that are in default is far below the national average of 17 percent, according to local bankers. Three bankers interviewed estimated the rate of defaults in Duluth is between one and five percent.

Duluth Schools Superintendent Mark Myles has proposed spending $16.5 million over the next five years for more specialist teachers, more books and computers, and better sports facilities. Funding would come from an excess tax levy that voters would need to approve Nov. 4.
The Duluth Planning Commission this week rejected a special use permit application for a proposed townhome project near the Glensheen Mansion. The proposal for "Glensheen Estates" and its 28 townhomes now goes to the Duluth City Council on Aug. 25.
