The federal government has turned down a request from Phillips, Wis., for disaster relief from a July 4 windstorm. Damage from the storm, which affected nearly all of the town's buildings, is estimated at $2.5 million.
Reserve Mining Co. has petitioned for less-stringent air pollution rules for its Milepost 7 taconite disposal site than those determined by the courts. The petition asks that the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency be ordered to issue all necessary permits for the site.

Duluth teachers asked for a five percent salary increase for each of the next two years in a negotiating session last week. It's the first financial proposal either side has put forward since negotiations began in May.
Bringing the decommissioned Navy heavy cruiser Des Moines to Duluth as a tourist attraction and memorial is still in a local group's plans. The 10-year-old effort has gotten renewed support from Gov. Arne Carlson and from a private donor.
