Federal mediator Robert Gomsrud will meet next week in Duluth with about 80 representatives of the United Steelworkers of America who represent 14,500 striking members. Gomsrud said he called the session to familiarize himself with the issues in the 12-day strike.
The first batch of furnaces built at the $1 million Fond du Lac Manufacturing Plant is scheduled to be marketed Sept. 1. Construction of the plant, the first industry on the Fond du Lac Indian Reservation, has now been completed.

Gate numbers for this year's Bayfront Blues Festival, which ended Sunday, show a 15 to 20 percent increase in attendance over last year's event. Bluesfest officials credit several factors for rising attendance, not the least of which was this year's weather.
The Duluth City Council voted 5-4 yesterday to close the Lester Park and Woodland branch libraries and merge them into a larger branch in the Mount Royal Shopping Center. The new library is expected to open by next March.
