Roger Sipe Caldwell made his first appearance in court yesterday since he was indicted in connection with the deaths of his mother-in-law, Elisabeth Congdon, and her nurse, Velma Pietila. Caldwell appeared relaxed, wearing blue jeans and sporting a new beard.
Local 8494 of the United Steelworkers of America has been served a temporary restraining order to cease blocking access to the American Hoist and Derrick Co. in Duluth. The union represents about 170 striking employees of the company.

Fairlawn Mansion and Museum in Superior will close for a year beginning Oct. 15 to undergo a major restoration of its first floor. It's the first phase of a master plan to return all five floors of the mansion to their original appearance.
The city of Superior is holding a groundbreaking ceremony tomorrow for the three-field Superior Soccer Complex at Catlin Avenue and North 28th Street. The fields, which should be finished late next year, will help accommodate Superior's approximately 1,000 soccer players.
