The Superior National Forest will sponsor a workshop this week in the Duluth Federal Building as part of an environmental analysis report on using herbicides in Minnesota forests. The government plans to spray the herbicide 2,4-D on 4,300 acres starting in late June.

Hughes Rudd, CBS-TV news correspondent, will be the speaker for the 60th annual Duluth Day Dinner May 18 in the Duluth Arena. Rudd has been associated with CBS news since 1959, covering events around the nation and around the world.

Iron ore giant Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. is considering developing a pig iron facility at its Northshore Mining Co. taconite plant in Silver Bay. Pig iron, a high-iron content product derived from taconite, is used as an additive in the manufacturing of steel.

A storm early yesterday dumped up to eight inches of snow in the area, causing school officials in the Twin Ports and at UMD to cancel classes. It was the first snow day of the season for Duluth public schools.
