A survey released yesterday by the Minnesota Department of Health indicates residents of Northeastern Minnesota are more likely to commit suicide than people in any other area of the state. There were 19.3 suicides per 100,000 population in this area in 1975.
The Duluth School Board will explore the concept of middle schools, in which students in grades five through eight are grouped together, at a committee-of-the-whole meeting tomorrow. The board is looking at ways to consolidate programs to save money.

April 18, 1997

About 1,000 people were evacuated from their homes yesterday after cracks were found in a Red River dike just south of downtown Grand Forks. The Red River is forecast to crest at between 50.5 and 51.5 feet today.
Duluth high school students yesterday helped move Churches United in Ministry's Emergency Food Shelf out of the Central Hillside Community Center. The students plan to open the lower floor of the community center as "The Basement" youth center in late May.
