Minnesota Power & Light Co. has asked for a 19.5 percent rate increase for its retail customers and an 8.4 percent increase for residential users. This is the third rate increase MP&L has filed for in the last 26 months.
Jury selection is to begin today in Brainerd in the first-degree murder trial of Roger S. Caldwell, accused in the slaying of Elisabeth Congdon and her nurse. Prosecutor John DeSanto said yesterday he plans to call about 140 witnesses during the trial.

The Minnesota Legislature yesterday passed an omnibus education bill that includes $1.13 million aimed at Duluth's poorest schools and students. The money is intended to help schools pay for changes in a federal school poverty aid program known as compensatory education.

A debate on whether to leave Eveleth's big hockey stick downtown or move it to the United States Hockey Hall of Fame has ended. The stick will remain downtown on a corner lot that may be developed into a major downtown tourist attraction.
