- The tourist industry near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northern Minnesota is in a state of stagnation, according to a study released this week. Area resorts had an average occupancy rate of only 63% in 1979.
- A Wisconsin structural steel expert is expected to arrive in Superior this morning to investigate complaints about construction on the new Arrowhead Bridge. A welder on the project has alleged that welds on steel pilings were done improperly and will not carry the necessary weight.

- Groups for and against the proposed smoking ordinance will be in attendance at tomorrow night's Duluth City Council meeting. Councilor Greg Gilbert, a co-sponsor of the ordinance, said there has been more discussion about this issue than on any he can remember.
- Moose Lake yesterday observed Katie's Day, a daylong series of events aimed at celebrating Katie Poirier's life and raising money for scholarships named in her honor. It was also a day that brought back bitter memories of her 1999 abduction.
