Winter returned to the Northland in a flurry Thursday, but most signs of the new snow disappeared by nightfall.

Morning snow added up to 1.5 inches at the Duluth airport, Cloquet and Alborn, according to the National Weather Service in Duluth. But by late afternoon the snow depth at the Duluth airport had returned to zero, as temperatures climbed into the upper 40s.

On this date a year ago, the snow depth at the Duluth airport was 22 inches.

Duluth's 2014-15 seasonal snowfall now stands at 45.8 inches - 29 inches below normal, and less than half of the 91.8 inches the city had received at this point last winter.

But winter may not be done with the Northland just yet. After a seasonal, mostly quiet weekend, parts of the region may see some snowfall next week.

"There is the potential for a significant storm next week," the Weather Service reported Thursday afternoon. "There is quite a bit of uncertainty concerning the track, and amount and type of precipitation."

Early indications are that northern parts of the region may see accumulating snow Tuesday into Wednesday, with a wintry mix to the south - though the forecast may change. Check duluthnewstribune.com today and through the weekend for forecast updates.
