The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources added burning restrictions for Lake and Cook counties Monday with nearly all snow melted across the area.
The two counties are the last in the region to see a ban on most wood and debris burning. Burning permits will not be issued except for unusual circumstances. Campfires still are allowed.
Early May often is the peak fire season in the Northland until trees and grasses turn green later in the month. The burning restrictions will be phased out from south to north as the region greens up.
Fire danger was considered high Monday across most of the Northland except for the extreme northeast, where it was listed as moderate.
