Officers responded to an alarm at the Pawnbrokers at 701 East Fourth Street at 10:08 p.m. on Oct. 18. During a search of the building, officers suspected someone was hiding in the basement. A K-9 unit was deployed after a loud warning. The dog went into the basement and found a hiding burglar. Officers took into custody at 43 year-old male who lives in the immediate neighborhood. After searching the man and removing jewelry stolen from the store, police transported the suspect to St. Mary's Medical Center where he was treated for dog bites. He was then transported to the St. Louis County Jail. Reports are being prepared and sent to the St. Louis County Attorney where a charging decision will be made.
The same man has been charged with the burglary of Auto Lube at 601 East Fourth Street which occurred on May 1, 2000. He is also a suspect in two other burglaries which occurred in the same neighborhood this year.
